Michael Brown is a Ph.D. candidate within Marshall's Biomedical Sciences graduate program and has been selected to receive funding from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium. The Board will fund his research project for $12,000, which will total $24,000 when the cost share is included.
Mike is a student in Dr. Valentovic’s laboratory and is conducting some challenging research. To learn more about the ongoing research in Dr. Valentovic’s laboratory, click here.
Mike is conducting research involving the attenuation of acetaminophen toxicity with S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). Acetaminophen is the leading cause of drug induced liver disease in the United States. SAMe is naturally produced by the body and has been demonstrated in Dr. Valentovic’s lab to reduce acetaminophen toxicity comparable to the current treatment of N-acetylcysteine. The grant deals with SAMe metabolic pathways and its ability to regenerate the liver following acetaminophen overdose. The long term goal of the research is to provide and alternative therapy to N-acetylcysteine.
Congratulations Mike!
